State lawmakers give an okay to two controversial bills concerning alcohol in Calhoun County and the rest of the state. The Associated Press reports House Bill 9 was approved by a 58 to 33 vote. HB9, commonly referenced as the Home Brew Bill, is the hotly contested bill that would remove the state’s distinction of being the only one in the nation that prohibits people from brewing small amounts of bee at home.
Opponents of the bill urged lawmakers to defeat the measure saying it would make it easier for children to gain access to beer while supporters argue that many in Alabama already take part in home brewing. The bill that passed the House on Tuesday limits home brewers from making more than 15 gallons during a three-month period, compared to a newly-passed Mississippi law that allows residents of that state to brew up to 200 gallons of beer.
Republican Rep. Mac McCutcheon told the AP that if passed, the bill would not allow home brewing in Alabama counties that do not allow the sale of alcohol. HB9 now moves to the Senate for debate.
Meanwhile, The Anniston Star reports Anniston’s Ecotourism Beverage Bill is staying alive after a House committee unanimously approved two versions of the bill on Tuesday. The Local Legislation Committee approved the bill that would allow the city council to decide whether or not to allow Sunday alcohol sales within the city limits.
The committee approval comes despite more than half of the County’s House delegation railing against the bill. According to The Star, Democratic Rep. Barbara Boyd of Anniston is only one of four Calhoun County lawmakers in the House that supports the bill.
The Anniston Ecotourism Beverage Bill now moves to the House floor for debate.
