A bill in Montgomery that puts strict regulations on abortion clinics has passed through the State House, but not before a rally urging its defeat. The Anniston Star reports House Bill 57 passed through the Senate late Tuesday. HB57 seeks new regulations imposed on the state’s abortion clinics that would change doctor privileges and building codes.
The roll call vote in the Senate saw five of the 10 “no” votes come from women and all but one come from Democrats. The other vote against the bill came from an Independent.
According to the Associated Press, organizers from Planned Parenthood joined several Democratic lawmakers at the Alabama State House on Tuesday afternoon to speak to a crowd estimated at 200 people. Democratic Sen. Linda Coleman of Birmingham told AL.com on Tuesday “the bill is not about safety. This bill is about denying access.” AL.com reports Capitol Police intervened on several occassions at the rally that saw pro-life and pro-choice supporters.
HB57 passed through the House in February by a 73 to 23 vote. The bill now goes to Governor Robert Bentley for final approval.
