The month of April has been proclaimed Autism Awareness Month in Alabama. Governor Robert Bentley on Monday made the announcement to highlight the growing need for concern and awareness about autism spectrum disorders.
According to Monday’s release, one in 88 children are identified as having an autism spectrum disorder. The prevalence rate increases even more when describing the male population; one in 54 boys are identified as having an autism spectrum disorder. The awareness campaign has been sponsored by the Autism Society of America since the 1970s.
Events will be held statewide celebrating the observance, including a series of Walks for Autism in 15 locations around the state. Saks High School will host a Walk for Autism event on Saturday, April 13.
Tuesday, April 2 is observed as World Autism Awareness Day.
