A former Alabama Department of Public Safety supervisor has pleaded guilty to bribery while his co-defendant goes on trial in Montgomery. The Associate Press reports James E. Potts pleaded guilty on Wednesday to one count of bribery. A federal grand jury indicted Potts and Leland J. McDowell last year. McDowell went on trial Monday.
According to the AP, McDowell worked for a fingerprinting machine company in 2007 when the state was setting up a system to do criminal background checks. Potts was an assistant supervisor with the Department of Public Safety. An indictment accuses McDowell of offering Potts $1,700 up front and $1 per fingerprint scan to recommend his company for the contract.
Potts resigned from the Department of Public Safety in 2008.
