Police in Tuscaloosa have arrested a man for the death of a teenager in 1978. The Tuscaloosa News reports 57-year-old James Michael Hayes was booked at the Tuscaloosa County Jail Monday on a capital murder charge. He is accused of strangling 18-year-old Teresa Carol White who was found on April 20, 1978 near Lake Nicol Dam. The News reports Hayes had been a suspect for many years because of his involvement in a similar case.
Hayes is already serving a life sentence at Draper Correctional Facility in Elmore for the strangulation murder of Regina Quarles in August 1978. The Quarles and White cases are similar because both women were last seen at a lounge in Tuscaloosa, both were strangled with their own clothing, and both bodies were covered with debris in a location where they were sure to be found. Hayes pleaded guilty to two counts of assault with intent to murder involving attacks on two other women in the spring of 1978.
If convicted in the death of Teresa White, Hayes could face the death penalty or life in prison without parole.
