A Texas-based company wants to build wind turbines in east-central Alabama to produce clean energy. AL.com reports the company Pioneer Green Energy has been looking at Cherokee and Etowah counties to build wind farms similar to ones built in New York, Pennsylvania, and Texas. A Jacksonville State University economic study estimates an Etowah County farm with between 25 and 40 turbines would provide between 19 and 30 permanent jobs and generate about $1.14 million in tax revenue for the county.
From a Cherokee County Commission meeting on Monday, AL.com reports about 75 people had questions for representatives from Pioneer Green even though the topic was not up for a vote. Commission Chairman Kirk Day told AL.com one reason Cherokee County is being considered for the project is a connection with the Tennessee Valley Authority but anything in Etowah would be a “different ballgame” since it is part of Alabama Power’s territory.
If approved, these would be the first wind turbines in the state.
