Officials in Houston and Dale counties are trying to figure out how they can keep the control tower open at the Dothan Regional Airport. Dothan Mayor Mike Schmitz told The Dothan Eagle an aircraft maintenance repair company was looking to open a plant in Dothan which could bring 500 new jobs, but last Friday the FAA placed Dothan’s tower on a list of airport control towers that are at risk of shutting down.
The Eagle reports officials with the company are hesitant to relocate to an airport without a function control tower. The tower is one of 149 contract towers across the country slated for closure by the Federal Aviation Administration as part of mandated budget cuts. Along with the Dothan Regional Airport tower on that list, Tuscaloosa Regional Airport tower is another Alabama control tower that will be closed.
According to the FAA, the closures are scheduled to begin April 7 as part of the agency’s sequestration plan.
