The Anniston Star reports Calhoun County License Commissioner Barry Robertson has asked state lawmakers in the House to consider a bill that would create a county license for each individual who sells items door-to-door. According to The Star, current state law requires door-to-door sales operations to get licenses to operate.
A new law would require individual salespeople to present their county license when asked and would also ban sales after dark. The request comes from a reported uptick in door-to-door sales in the county which has Robertson and the Sheriff’s Office fielding complaints from local residents unnerved by sales pitches.
The licensing bill would also require background checks for potential salespeople and would also authorize the county commission to provide the county’s license commissioner a vehicle to enforce new licensing laws. Republican Rep. Randy Wood of Saks has agreed to sponsor the bill.
