One mother has plenty of support in her fight to prevent Birmingham Police officers from using mace on students. Several organizations, including the SPLC, Birmingham AFT, and Greater Birmingham Ministries are behind the effort. Parent, Latonya Stearnes says her two daughters were sprayed with mace at school. She has collected 25,000 signatures on a petition asking Birmingham Schools and Police to stop using the weapon to control students.
The SPLC currently represents eight Birmingham students in a lawsuit that aims to ban the use of mace in schools. No trial date has been set.
