Monday afternoon storms that blew across the state have left thousands without power. An Alabama Power spokesperson says more than 98,000 customers are without power early Tuesday morning. More than half of those without power are in and around Anniston. Strong winds from the Monday storms led to downed trees and power lines in dozens of communities across the state.

The National Weather Service recorded wind speeds of 80 mph in some areas. Sections of Highway 78 in the extreme eastern part of Calhoun County were impassible for much of Monday evening while crews worked to remove trees and first responders worked a two-car accident. No injuries were reported. There were also reports of trees across Choccolocco Road.
In Heflin, a woman on oxygen treatments had to be rescued when a tree fell into her home. The AP reports Etowah County officials said a person had to be removed from a house in Rainbow City after a tree fell into it. According to the AP, eight people in the Gadsden area and five others in the county were hospitalized Monday night and the extent of their injuries is not known.
