Alabama Power is reporting that the widespread damage from Monday's storms could mean some communities will be without power for days. At 8:30 p.m. the company said that they had restored power to 70,000 customers. Just over 144,000 people remain in the dark Monday night. The current outages break down as follows:
-79,000 to the east of Birmingham (Anniston, Gadsden, Oneonta, Heflin) -39,500 in metro Birmingham (scatted across Jefferson and Shelby Counties) -22,500 to the west of Birmingham (Jasper, Carbon Hill, Fayette) - And another 3,000 scattered across portions of southern Alabama
In a 7 p.m. update, Alabama Power said that they had restored power to about 46,000 customers. In a 5:30 p.m. update on their website, the power company announced they had topped out around 198,000 people who lost power due to the severe weather. "The damage is extensive, and extremely widespread… Some customers in areas where there is heavy or complicated damage may not get power until later this week," Alabama Power said on their website. The company is bringing in workers from other states to help restore power. They say they already have crews working on repairs and doing damage assessment.
