Calhoun County unemployment in January jumps to 8.1 percent while the state’s rate stays barely below 7 percent. Governor Robert Bentley’s office on Monday released the preliminary employment numbers for January that show a sharp spike in Calhoun County unemployment.
The release shows a slight drop in the number of Calhoun County workers along with an additional 1,000 newly unemployed workers. The revised December unemployment rate in the county was 6.8 percent, matching the state rate for the same month.
Unemployment for the entire state of Alabama rose slightly in January to 6.9 percent. State Labor Commissioner Tom Surtees said Alabama is seeing a positive trend, but officials must remain focused on the more than 148,000 Alabamians still looking for work.
Employment numbers for individual counties has not been seasonally adjusted. Wilcox County has the highest unemployment with 17.4 percent, and Shelby County has the lowest rate at 5.4 percent.
