A growing number of law enforcement officials across the state are publicly criticizing a proposed gun law currently working its way through the state Legislature. The Cherokee County Post reports Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver has joined law enforcement officials from Mobile and Escambia counties in voicing displeasure with legislation proposed by Republican Sen. Scott Beason of Gardendale.
Senate Bill 286 would allow non-U.S. Citizens to receive pistol permits, repeal prohibition of guns at many public places, and change some laws concerning concealed weapons. Shaver says his main complaint is the proposal could establish local boards to oversee a sheriff’s decision whether or not to issue a concealed weapons permit.
He says lawmakers may not realize the consequences of the proposal because law enforcement was not part of drafting the law.
