The Anniston Star reports Heflin police arrested 41 year-old Dawit Shiferaw Bekele on Monday after police discovered the van he was driving was carrying hundreds of pounds of pot. Heflin interim police chief Capt. A.J. Benefield told The Star the Virginia man has been charged with trafficking, resisting arrest and driving without a license.
Bekele was driving eastbound on Interstate 20 near the 199 exit Monday when he was pulled over for improper lane usage around 4 a.m. Police searched the white rental van he was driving when they found plastic-wrapped cubes of marijuana. Police estimate the marijuana is worth about $490,000. Benefield told The Star that more arrests could be made, saying the van was rented by another person in Atlanta.
Bond for Bekele had been set at $1 million.
