A Birmingham man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal attack of a woman in Southside in July 2011. Wyndell Hamner was sentenced this week to life imprisonment after pleading guilty to rape and attempted murder, according to court documents. He was originally charged with rape, kidnapping, attempted murder and burglary. Police say Hamner slipped into the victim's Chateau Avalon apartment through her balcony a little before 6 a.m. July 27. He then sexually assaulted the victim, cut her throat and stabbed her stomach, according to officials. Hamner fled from the scene and remained on the loose for months until being arrested in April 2012. The Birmingham Sex Crimes Unit investigated the case and created a composite sketch of the suspect with the help of the victim, who survived the attack. Hamner was 24 years old at the time of his arrest.
