The Decatur Daily reports the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant in Athens will soon perform the third and final inspection seeking regulatory relief from a severe safety finding issued two years ago.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said the final inspection is the most rigorous and will involve 22 inspectors from across the country. The testing does not come cheap with TVA ratepayers covering the $273 per hour bill required for the inspections.
Problems began in 2010 when Browns Ferry workers discovered a core cooling valve in one of the reactors was jammed shut. According to The Daily, that valve is critical in cooling the reactor core in the event of a fire. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued a red finding for the plant, the most severe citation short of closing a plant. Only four other plants have ever received a red finding.
