A Georgia congressman says he was moved to tears when the Montgomery police chief apologized for officers who failed to act during an attack on Freedom Riders more than 50 years ago. U.S. Representative John Lewis from Atlanta was one of the original Freedom Riders in 1961 and was on hand for this year’s Congressional Civil Rights Pilgrimage to Alabama.
The Montgomery Advertiser reports Lewis and Montgomery police Chief Kevin Murphy on Saturday spoke about the day in 1961 when a white mob beat Freedom Riders as their bus arrived at the Greyhound station in the state’s capital.
Lewis said the Montgomery Police Department made the decision to not be on the scene, and Murphy apologized for the department’s inaction. Murphy then presented Lewis with his police badge and felt the apology was something that should have been issued a long time ago.
The 1961 Freedom Riders also experienced violence in Anniston when a mob set fire to their bus, days before being jailed in Birmingham and a week before violence in Montgomery.
