The school bus driver who lost his life trying to protect students on his bus in Midland City will soon be honored. The state school board is planning a special tribute for Charles Poland, Jr. Poland was shot and killed when Jimmy Lee Dykes stormed onto his bus and kidnapped 5-year-old Ethan Kirkland and kept his captive in an underground bunker. Investigators say Poland tried to stop Dykes and in the process gave most students on the bus time to escape. Today the state school board reviewed a resolution they plan to officially approve next month. It honors Poland for his heroism. The state board of education will vote on the resolution at their next meeting on March 14.
