The Associated Press reports the Senate Health Committee held a hearing on Wednesday to listen to public comments about the bill sponsored by Republican Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin of Pelham. The women’s safety bill would require all doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at local hospitals and some facilities to undergo major building modifications.
Opponents of the legislation say the tight restrictions would force clinics in the state to close. The Montgomery Advertiser reviewed deficiency reports and found a vast majority of citations were for relatively minor issues such as missing paperwork or mislabeled bottles. Out of 60 reports filed since 1999, The Advertiser found only two instances of women suffering harm and no patient deaths were reported.
Passage through the committee next week would send the bill to the Senate for a final vote.
