During a city council work session on Tuesday, the Citizens’ Advisory Consultant Screening Committee recommended three planning consultant groups to assist Anniston in its comprehensive planning process. Committee Chairperson Ann Welch said 16 groups were interviewed in total and the committee was "looking for a group that has a strong focus on community involvement."
The council will use the narrowed list of consultant groups to select one that the city will use to implement its strategic plan.
Also at Tuesday’s city council work session, groups of citizens submitted budget requests for a variety of events planned for this summer. A celebration has been planned to commemorate Anniston becoming a public city in 1883. Councilman Jay Jenkins recommended the more than $26,000 in total requested should not come solely from city funds. "Rather than pull it straight out of city coffers, we're going to try to engage the community and get some funding support from there," Jenkins said. "We'll make up the difference."
Events currently being planned for the summer celebration include city-wide talent shows, musical performances, and tours of historic Anniston landmarks.
Business during Tuesday’s public meeting included declaring some city property as surplus. Some of the property includes old police vehicles that will be auctioned off by the city, and property on W 14th St will be used by the Anniston Water Works and Sewer Board. Councilman David Reddick offered an amendment to the resolution making the transfer subject to the approval of a real estate attorney. "There was a discrepancy. The building was owned by one person, the property was owned by another person," he said after the meeting. Reddick said this discrepancy may pose a problem if the building owner decided not to sell but the city already re-purposed the land.
The resolution passed unanimously.
