NASA’s top administrator will be in the state to examine equipment designed as part of the agency’s next generation of space flight vehicles. NASA Administrator Charles Bolden is scheduled to visit the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville Friday. According to a NASA release this week, he will meet with manufacturing manager John Vickers to look at tools being developed to reduce manufacturing time and costs. Vickers manages the Advanced Manufacturing Rapid Prototyping Facility at Marshall and is tasked with designing tools used in selective laser melting. The tools are similar to 3-D printing and enable production of strong metal parts without welding. The tools are being used to build the Space Launch System. The SLS will be the country’s next-generation of heavy-lifting launch vehicles designed to replace the retired Space Shuttle program. NASA Administrator Charles Bolden is scheduled to begin his tour of the Huntsville facility at 12:30 p.m.
