Senate Democrats in Montgomery are having trouble pressing their top issue of Medicaid expansion in the state. According to the Associated press, Senate Minority Leader vivian Davis Figures of Mobile offered a resolution on Thursday asking Republican Governor Robert Bentley to reconsider his decision to not expand Medicaid.
Senate GOP leader and President Pro Tem Del Marsh of Anniston cut off debate on the resolution by getting it sent to the Senate Rules Committee. Sen. Figures tells the AP that expanding Medicaid under the federal Affordable Care Act is the top priority for the Senate’s Democratic Caucus because it would not only add 300,000 Alabamians to the Medicaid rolls but it would also create jobs.
Despite Thursday’s debate described by The Anniston Star as a ‘skirmish,’ Figures says Democrats will not give up on efforts to convince the Governor to reconsider his decision.
