A group met at the Peerless Bar and Grill in downtown Anniston on Thursday for the inaugural meeting of the Yellowhammer Filmmakers of Northeast Alabama. The Yellowhammer Filmmakers hopes to build and expand a film industry in Calhoun County and surrounding areas that organizers believe could an economic boon for the region.
Nearly 20 people were in attendance for screenings of three short films and a presentation by organizer Annie Brunson. Brunson has worked on independent films as well as produced Anniston’s Dancing With Our Stars for the past four years. Beyond creating jobs directly associated with filmmaking, Brunson said the Yellowhammer Filmmakers can also develop resources for larger production companies looking for filming locations in the South.
Similar efforts by the Northeast Alabama Entertainment Initiative have already been started through the film department at Jacksonville State University. Brunson said she wants the Yellowhammer Filmmakers to work with the Entertainment Initiative in marketing northeast Alabama as “film-friendly” for independent filmmakers as well as major commercial films and television.
In 2009, lawmakers in Montgomery passed the Entertainment Industry Initiative Act which gives rebates to production companies that spend and hire in Alabama. As a result, Warner Brothers began filming a major motion picture in Birmingham about the life of Jackie Robinson and will feature Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford. The film titled “42” will feature scenes from historic Rickwood Field and is scheduled to be released in April.
Brunson said many other states have similar incentives. According to a short film by JSU's Entertainment Initiative, the state of Louisiana used legislation aimed at the entertainment industry increased revenue by $1 billion between 2001 and 2011.
She plans for the Yellowhammer Filmmakers to host a film festival in Anniston by 2015 and wants to begin working with local filmmakers in the upcoming months to host a 10-day short film competition.
The next meeting of the Yellowhammer Filmmakers of Northeast Alabama is scheduled for March 21.
