A controversial bill in Montgomery concerning abortion clinics in the state will move to the Senate after passing through the House of Representatives. A Reuters report on The Hufffington Post says The Women’s Health and Safety Act was approved by the Republican-controlled House. The bill would mandate that an Alabama-licensed physician with hospital admitting privileges be present at every abortion. The Reuters report says abortion clinics currently partner with local doctors who have hospital admitting privileges to provide follow-up care. Supporters of the bill say it is intended to make abortion clinics meet standards set for hospitals and make women safer. The lone abortion clinic in Mississippi has filed a lawsuit to halt a new state law similar to the proposed Alabama bill, arguing it is unconstitutional and saying it will eventually lead to its closure. Republican Rep. Sue McClurkin said that the bill protects women that choose to have an abortion by providing a safe and healthy environment, but those against the bill worry that excessive standards may force clinics to close. Democratic Rep. Juandalynn Givan said the legislature needs to make sure they are not imposing restrictions on abortion clinics that would jeopardize a woman’s right to choose.
