Adoptions through the county animal control will now have a fee to help the group continue providing services throughout Calhoun County. The Calhoun County Commission last week approved the Animal Control Advisory Board’s request to impose a $25 fee on all adoptions.
The Calhoun County Animal Control Advisory Board was formed early in 2012 and since then has been up against financial barriers trying to fund a program. Advisory board chairman Janet Odom said “we’re probably one of the only facilities in the state that does not charge a fee.”
Odom said on Thursday that the animal control has never charged an adoption fee but began making changes once Dani LaPlant became director in January. She said that the new fee will help the group expand services like de-worming and other medical services needed by animals. “This fee will allow us to treat them if they need to be treated,” Odom said.
Odom said hundreds of animals pass through the animal shelter each month, which can be a daunting task for the three full-time and two part-time employees. She said that the board will have to wait to see exactly how the money raised from the new adoption fee will be spent.
“We have a very, very, very small budget and that [has been] coming from donations.” Odom said that 100 percent of the fee will remain with the animal control advisory board in an effort to keep the group self-sustaining.
