An Anniston woman was transported to University Hospital in Birmingham with serious injuries after being trapped under and dragged by an 18-wheeler carrying a steel coil.
According to Talladega police Capt. Leon Thomas, the Mercedes C230 was traveling east on the 275 Bypass when the truck appears to have run the stop sign where Eastaboga Road crosses. The driver of the Mercedes did not have time to avoid the truck, and ended up getting trapped directly underneath it. The truck then dragged her some 380 feet down Eastaboga Road before coming to a stop.
Police received the call at 12:02 p.m. and were on the scene in less than four minutes, but even so, a crane had to be called out to lift the coil off the truck so that it could be moved off the car.
Talladega firefighters then had to use the jaws of life to get her out of the vehicle. LifeSaver helicopter was unable to respond because of the weather, and a critical care ambulance could not be located, so the woman was ultimately transferred to University Hospital by NorthStar paramedics after being treated at the emergency room of Citizens Baptist Medical Center in Talladega.
As of late Friday afternoon WDNG recieved unconfirmed reports that the victim of the crash had passed away. We are in the process of trying to get a confirmation on her condition and will continue to update on this story as information becomes available.
