In an 80-19 vote in Montgomery on Thursday, the Alabama House of Representatives approved a bill that will require lawmakers to repay the $437 million raid from the state’s savings account within 13 years. The bill is sponsored by Republican Rep. Jay Love of Montgomery.
The Associated Press reports lawmakers against the bill say the money should be paid back sooner. Democratic Rep. Joe Hubbard sponsored an amendment to repay the money in only six years but that bill was defeated by a 67-28 vote.
Love promised Hubbard that legislators were committed to seeing that the money is repaid. Lawmakers last year asked voters for permission to borrow the money to balance the cash-strapped General Fund budget during a funding crisis that was threatening the state's Medicaid program.
Rep. Love told the AP that lawmakers passing legislation repaying the money clearly demonstrates that Republicans are following through on their promise.
