Details were discussed at an Anniston Board of Education work session Thursday evening about a future strategic plan for the system’s seven schools. Superintendent Joan Frazier says the board is currently working on getting a candidate pool of strategic planners.
The board currently has two individuals for consideration but Frazier says she would like to have a larger selection. “We’re going to be developing a larger list of possible strategic planners that we are going to consider to come in and lead our process,” Frazier said.
She could not give an exact date of when the strategic planner would be in place but hopes to have a list compiled by the board’s next meeting later this month.
During the work session, board members also familiarized themselves with the financial operations of the school system. Financial Officer Jimmie Thompson III presented a financial assessment.
He said laws require the board to keep at least one month’s worth of operating funds in reserve and that the system currently has almost three months saved. Thompson told the board an average of $1.4 million is spent per month across the entire school system.
Before Thursday’s work session, the Anniston Board of Education held a special called board meeting to approve an employment contract with a new occupational therapist. The board did not extend the former contract citing staffing issues with the previous therapy provider.
The board unanimously approved a new contract with Sheretta Gamble-Smith. Gamble-Smith is a Registered Occupational Therapist in Anniston who will be contracted with the school system until the end of the fiscal year in September.
Frazier said the position is required for schools with special needs students.
