People in the Calhoun County town of Weaver are talking about selling liquor in their city on Sundays. First, Anniston requested the authority for possible Sunday liquor sales. Now, the nearby town of Weaver wants the same thing. Weaver's city council voted unanimously to request that authority from the state legislature. The move would allow beer and other alcoholic beverages to be sold by the area's convenience stores and also by any bars and restaurants that are in Weaver. The city is also considering plans to annex two businesses that sell alcohol and would benefit from such a move. One of those is Heroes Sports Bar and Brew Pub. Marc Spaulding and his wife co-own Heroes, and Marc says he could have had a packed house this past Sunday when the super bowl was being played. Weaver's mayor says no one showed up to oppose the move at the council meeting. He says his reasoning for wanting the Sunday liquor says is more income for a city that's currently strapped for cash. "I don't have any intentions of insulting any religious groups. My decisions are based on finances. When I took office in November, Weaver was on the verge of bankruptcy. We had to take some drastic means, we had bills that couldn't be paid," Mayor Willis said. The resolution from Weaver is a formal request for the state legislature to give them the authority to set Sunday liquor sales. If the legislature approves, Weaver's council could then approve those sales in their city limits.
