Five students were stuck by small needles at McAdory Middle School on Tuesday as part of one student's prank, Jefferson County officials said. The student who brought the needles told a deputy that they belonged to his mother. Chief Deputy Randy Christian said the one-time use small needles, or "lancets," are the type used to prick fingers for blood sugar tests. A total of six needles were found at the school. "One student that pricked a 12-year-old was interviewed by deputies and said he had gotten the needle from another student. This student was interviewed and told deputies that the needles were his mother's and he had brought them from home," Christian said. Principal James McCleod said the student used the needles to stick a few of his friends as a prank. Those who got "stuck" said they thought it was a hand buzzer at first.
Nez Calhoun, spokesperson for Jefferson County Schools, said the nurse checked out the students who were stuck by the needles. She added that the parents were notified and a message was sent out to all sixth grade students.
McCleod said while this was not considered a bullying incident, the student was still disciplined according to the school's handbook.
The principal said he hopes the incident serves as a reminder to parents to check their kids' backpacks every day before they come to school.
