The Anniston Star reports from Montgomery that longtime state Rep. Richard Laird of Roanoke announced on Monday that he is leaving the Democratic Party saying “I’m leaving the party because i think it left me a long time ago.”
The 73-year-old Laird was first elected to the Alabama House of Representatives in 1978. Laird joins a number of lawmakers who left the Democratic Party and tells The Star that the national party has grown more liberal. He said the state’s Democrats are no longer ideologically distinct from the national party.
The former Democrat said he chose not to become a Republican because his constituents didn't vote for a Republican. Laird joins Slocumb Sen. Harri Anne Smith as one of only two independents in the legislature.
