A teenager in Mobile County who escaped from a courtroom and eluded authorities has been recaptured.
AL.com reports 18-year-old Deven Lane Stephens escaped a Mobile courtroom Wednesday, ran through an emergency exit and eluded several officers and bondsmen. A lawyer witnessed the escape and told AL.com that the man was not handcuffed when a corrections officer left the courtroom to get another inmate.
More than four hours after the courtroom escape Stephens was found hiding under a home in Chickasaw, just north of Mobile.
During his Wednesday morning court appearance for a third-degree burglary charge, Stephens’s bond was revoked from an arrest in December for manufacturing and trafficking methamphetamine.
A spokesperson for the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office told AL.com that Stephens was not in police custody at the time of his court appearance.
