Alabama’s legislature convenes for a new session beginning next Tuesday and will see another attempt to legalize medical marijuana. In preparation for the start of the 2013 legislative session on February 5, Democratic Representative Patricia Todd of Birmingham has pre-filed a bill that seeks to legalize marijuana for medical purposes.
A total of 18 states have already passed laws allowing the use of marijuana for medical purposes and two state have legalized the general use of the plant despite ongoing federal prohibitions. Todd tells the Associated Press that her spirits are buoyed because similar bills have been passed in other states.
Officials with the Libertarian Party of Alabama released a statement last Tuesday urging Alabama residents to contact state senators and representatives and ask these lawmakers to enact the Alabama Medical Marijuana Patients Rights Act. According to the AP report, party Chairman Mark Bodenhausen said this issue isn’t about marijuana; this is about compassion for suffering patients.
Rep. Todd said if her bill passes that Alabama would place another tool in the medical bag for treating people in pain. Todd’s bill is the first issue scheduled to be considered on Wednesday by the House Health Committee.
Committee chairman Representative Jim McClendon of Springville said the bill has been in his committee before, but this could be the first time it comes up for a vote.
