Police say a suspect, involved in a standoff in Midland City, was scheduled to be in court Wednesday to face a charge of menacing neighbors. Right now, police, SWAT teams and negotiators have surrounded a rural property where the shooting suspect is believed to be hiding in an underground shelter. The suspect is accused of fatally shooting a school bus driver and fleeing with a 6-year-old child. The standoff started Tuesday afternoon. Police say the man got on the school bus and asked for a child. The bus driver, Charles Albert Poland, Jr., refused to let the child off the bus. The suspect shot Poland several times. He later died from his injuries.
The Salvation Army has deployed a mobile feeding unit from Dothan to Dale County to provide support to first responders at the site of the hostage situation. By sunrise on Wednesday, volunteers had served over 250 hot meals. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be prepared throughout the day on Wednesday in continued support of the hostage standoff.
