A sinkhole at a developing shopping center should not delay the opening of a Publix grocery store but may cost the City of Oxford an unknown amount of money. The sinkhole was first noticed in November at the old Davis Farm property in Oxford, where construction crews have been working on the Oxford Commons shopping center.
The Anniston Star reports that officials with the Publix grocery store chain were not aware of construction delays at the Oxford location and remain hopeful about a February opening. According to The Star, the sinkhole may have to be repaired with funds from the Oxford Commercial Development Authority.
Oxford councilman Mike Henderson told The Star that the development company may share the cost of repairs. The matter will be brought up at tonight’s regularly scheduled Oxford city council meeting. A sinkhole discovered in 2009 near the current Publix building cost the Oxford CDA about $350,000 to repair.
