Teen birth rates in the state reached a historic low according the the state Department of Public Health.
Officials say the teen birth rate in 2011 fell to about 21 births per 1,000 women ages 10 to 19, or roughly 6,700 births to Alabama teen mothers. Just over 11-percent of all babies born in the state are to teenages mothers That number is down from 32 percent in 2000 and the peak 58 percent in 1973.
Officials say programs that target high-risk youth and abstinence education working in conjunction with local health departments and other organizations have all contributed to the recent decline in teen birth rates.
