139 General Dynamics employees at the Anniston Army Depot were notified Monday they will be laid off by March. A spokesman for General Dynamics says that a $170 million order to retrofit the hulls on existing Stryker infantry combat vehicles would have prevented the recent layoffs. Reuters reports the Army and other military services are unsure about future budget levels given mounting pressures on the overall defense budget.
About 300 General Dynamics employees wrote to Alabama lawmakers in December requesting they continue efforts to avoid more layoffs. That same month, nearly 100 employees were laid off from the Anniston facility.
General Dynamics currently employs just over 400 people but the newly announced layoffs will drop the workforce to around 260. BAE Systems, another company with defense contracts, recently closed an Anniston plant and slashed about 150 jobs.
