A standoff in Coldwater that lasted for nearly five hours on Friday ended peacefully when a man who barricaded himself in a mobile home surrendered to police. Shortly before 11 o’clock this morning Oxford Police Chief Bill Partridge said negotiators were able to get the unidentified man to leave the mobile home just off of Highway 78 west of Oxford, but not before gas was deployed. The ordeal began in the 4 o’clock hour this morning when police received a call about a man threatening his ex-wife and their son with a knife. Authorities say he then left his ex-wife’s home and went to his mother’s trailer on Harkins Drive where he barricaded himself and his mother in the home. The woman was able to flee the home which left the man alone in the home. Oxford Police and Alabama State Troopers evacuated nearby homes and began negotiations with the man over the phone. After about five hours he finally surrendered to police shortly before 10:30 and was seen in the back of an Oxford Police cruiser leaving the area. Oxford Police Chief Bill Partridge speaking from the scene: “Police initially came here looking for him. That’s where they made contact with him and that’s when he said that ‘you all just need to take it to the next level. Somebody’s going to die today.’ So he barricaded himself inside the residence.” No injuries were reported from the standoff. Recovered from the home was a toy gun wrapped in electrical tape, apparently fashioned to look similar to a small handgun. Chief Partridge said he has been charged with domestic violence and may face other charges as the investigation continues.
