In their final meeting of the year, the Calhoun County Commission unanimously agreed on several orders of business, including leasing a communications tower for one year. The Alabama Regional Communications System, or ARCS, maintains the 800 MHz portable radio network for law enforcement and first responders and will be leasing a communications tower from the County for the next year. The network also signals nearly 200 outdoor warning sirens in Calhoun and Talladega counties. ARCS will pay about $2,600 to rent the Wood Hill tower for all of 2013 which will be part of an extensive radio network that reaches from southern Talladega County to northern Calhoun and Cleburne Counties. According to the ARCS website, the network was launched in 1997 to enhance notifications from the Anniston Army Depot and ARCS was formed earlier this year after federal funding from the Depot stopped with the end of weapons destruction.
