A plan to save Alabama taxpayer money was updated in Montgomery on Thursday and has identified more than $750 million in savings. Governor Robert Bentley said in a release that the Road to a Billion Dollars in Savings plan introduced in July originally identified about $670 million but the end-of-the-year update this week has added about $76 million to that figure. The extra savings are reducing the immediate need for a proposed voluntary retirement incentive program, according to the Governor's office, and lawmakers in Montgomery are being asked by the Governor to withhold introduction of the legislation until further notice. Governor Bentley said such a plan could be considered an “additional option if needed for future savings,” and believes the goal of saving one billion dollars of taxpayer money can be reached with regular attrition and other cost-saving measures. By not replacing some recently retiring state employees, the savings plan introduced in July is expected to benefit both the Education Trust Fund and the General Fund budgets.
