We're learning more about the deadly shooting that happened in the city of Heflin Saturday morning. Three people are dead, two others injured, including a small child and a police officer. The suspect is also dead after leading police on a chase.
The Cleburne County Sheriff's office says the officer who was shot is out of surgery, but his condition is unknown. "It's a tragedy." A domestic dispute turned deadly in the Guzman Trailer Park around 11:00 Saturday morning in the city of Heflin.
Chief Investigator, Dennis Green,said "Our deputy was dispatched here this morning on what he thought was a suspicious person in the trailer park, and everything led to that." The Cleburne County Sheriff's Office says the suspect shot and killed three adults in a mobile home. A child under the age of two was also shot and airlifted to a Georgia hospital. The child's mother survived the shooting. Investigators believe the suspect was related to the victims.
Once the suspect left the scene. Police say he headed East on Highway 78 before crashing into a vehicle at a red light on Leon Smith Parkway.
Oxford Police Chief Bill Partridge "He exited the vehicle and started shooting at the officers. The officers returned fire. One of the officers was struck in the leg with an AK 47 rifle. The officer went down there. The suspect car jacked another vehicle and went Northbound into Anniston." One woman we spoke to knew the officer shot and described the scene as very chaotic. Lesa Valdez said "People were scattering out of their vehicles."
The Heflin Police Officer was taken to Regional Medical Center and a chase began. Several law enforcement agencies got involved. The suspect was headed down Beck Road in Coldwater and hit another vehicle. That's when the Oxford Swat Team grabbed their guns.
Chief Partridge says "Two of our swat officers confronted him where a shooting occurred. The suspect is deceased." The Sheriff's Office has not release the names of the victims or the suspect. The condition of the child is still unknown.
