The Calhoun County Courthouse is embracing a new State mandated e-filing system that has cut back on paperwork for courthouse staff as well as attorneys. The Alacourt.gov website became the official way for attorneys to file court documents since October 1 but local attorneys and judges have been familiar with the process for some time longer. The Calhoun County Courthouse underwent layoffs in 2011 that cut thirteen jobs but the new e-filing system has allowed the reduced staff to put a dent in processing backlogs of court documents. Some local attorneys who are not quite familiar with the new way of electronically processing court documents state that they are still accepting of the mandate signed by Chief Justice Chuck Malone last September and see it as a good time-saving measure necessary after budget cuts and reduced courthouse staffing across the state.
