Alabama will receive at least $300 million in recovery relief from BP who pled guilty to 14 criminal charges related to the Gulf oil spill in 2010.An agreement between the US Department of Justice and British Petroleum settles the criminal charges with a $4 billion payout to affected areas. State or local governments, however, don’t get the cash. Instead the money will go to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, a non-profit group founded by the US Congress in 1984 that has extensive conservation networks along the Gulf coast and elsewhere in the country. The Foundation says they have already invested more than $20 million into protecting key fish and wildlife threatened by the spill. The settlement was seen as a “step forward” by UA professor William Andreen who said the settlement also requires BP take steps that improve operations in the gulf that include updated training for workers and continuing developments in safety technology.
