The US Department of Education’s Race to the Top program has selected finalists that will compete for $400 million in awards, and among the finalists are schools in Calhoun County. Piedmont City Schools applied for the grant as part of a larger consortium with schools from six other states. More than 370 school districts applied for the federal money last summer and only 61 were selected yesterday. According to the Piedmont Journal, Piedmont Schools alone stand to receive $12 million dollars to support classroom-level reform efforts and hope to use the money to provide individualized instruction to students over the course of four years. Schools must submit to a student-performance based evaluation to be eligible for the Race to the Top program and last week Piedmont Schools approved a new evaluation process. The winner of the grant money will be announced next month by the US Department of Education.
