Auburn University has decided to part ways with head football coach Gene Chizik. "After careful consideration and a thorough evaluation of our football program, I have recommended that Coach Chizik not be retained," said Jacobs. "President Gogue has accepted my recommendation. Earlier this morning, I informed Gene that he will not return as head coach." The university announced the decision on the heels of a disappointing 3-8 season that ended with an embarrassing 49-0 defeat to in-state rival Alabama last Saturday. Chizik's career at Auburn ends after only four seasons on the Plains, and just two years removed from a BCS National Championship. His final coaching record at Auburn is 33-19.
Jay Jacobs said he has formed a search committee to find Chizik's replacement which includes Auburn alumni Mac Crawford, Pat Sullivan and Bo Jackson. Potential Candidates (most recent position): Bobby Petrino, former Arkansas head coach Gus Malzahn, current head coach at Arkansas State Kirby Smart, current defensive coordinator at Alabama Jimbo Fisher, current head coach at Florida State
Chizik's Staff Members: Assistant Head Coach/Wide Receivers: Trooper Taylor Offensive Coordinator: Scott Loeffler Defensive Coordinator: Brian Van Gorder Offensive Line: Jeff Grimes Running Backs: Curtis Luper Linebackers: Tommy Thigpen Defensive Line: Mike Pelton Secondary: Willie Martinez Special Teams: Jay Boulware
