The City Council approved an ordinance increasing the salary for the mayor and council for the next term at Tuesday’s council meeting.
The base salary of the mayor will increase from $1,200 to $2,500 per month.
The base salary of the council is established at $350 per month, the same as the current pay scale.
According to the ordinance, “To promote and encourage a better understanding of the policies, financial rules, budgets, state laws, rules, regulations, grant programs, and procedures that govern and affect the city, the city council does hereby provide additional compensation for each elected official of the city that enrolls himself in the continuing education program for elected municipal officials of the State of Alabama.”
Full attendance to the Orientation Conference provided by the Alabama League of Municipalities will give a $50 pay increase, the same as in the current ordinance.
Completion of a minimum of 10 hours of education courses offered by the League or approved by the League toward a designation of “Basic or Advanced Certified” or continuing education beyond the certification requirements during each calendar year will provide a $100 pay increase, up from the current $50 pay increase. This is not a cumulative pay increase. A member who does not complete 10 hours or more within the calendar year shall not be eligible for the continuing education benefit.
Completion of the Basic Certified Municipal Official will result in a $100 pay increase, up from the current $50 pay increase.
Completion of the Advanced Certified Municipal Official will result in a $100 pay increase, up from the current $50 pay increase.
The ordinance is effective on the first Monday in November.
