The group Friends of the Talladega National Forest has applied for a grant with hopes of expanding a wildlife refuge in McClellan. The environmental group’s Facebook page also listed plans for offering guided hikes to visitors and providing resources for Cleburne County teachers. Last June, Friends of the Talladega National Forest worked with groups throughout the Southeast to organize public support against fracking. The resulting movement successfully delayed the sale of federal land for the controversial method of natural gas drilling.
