Dozens of U.S. Army Reserves work hard all day on Vietnam Veteran Arthur Jemison's house that was destroyed in the April 2011 tornado. "I was kind of devastated because I knew what I had to go through," says Jemison. That morning, he rushed to his daughter's house because she wasn't feeling well, turned to the news and found out that the tornado was in route to his house. Jemison says, "I told her that it might get my house, and as soon as it passed her house, I jumped in my truck and came up here and everything was gone." With nowhere to turn, he moved in with his daughter. "I would've been killed if I was here, laying on that bed, but I thank God I wasn't here," says Jemison.
But now, Jemison's destruction turned into construction and recovery, thanks to the engineering company of the U.S. Army Reserves. 1st Lieutenant William Hicks says, "He's blessed, he feels like, I think he likes the fact that people outside of his immediate family is here to help." Helping with patching up the walls, hanging windows, painting and cabinetry work. Lt. Hicks says not only is this experience helping Jemison, it's good for the soldiers as well. "We thought it would be good training for us to come and help, since they already are carpenters, electricians and plumbers. so we can provide some good experience to help move the project along faster," says Hicks.
But til this day, Jemison will never forget how the tornado swallowed up his house. He says he's thankful that so many took the time out of their day, so he can have a place to call home once again. Jemison says, "God is so good, he's been blessing me, I feel so uplifted." Jemison's house is expected to be complete on or before November 11th, Veterans Day.
