The Department of Public Health should release the list of 44 health clinics in our state that received products from the New England Compounding Center. The Massachusetts facility is at the center of a nationwide meningitis outbreak. Alabama health officials have contacted four more Alabamians who received injections of the steroid medicine that has been linked to the meningitis outbreak. Two of the patients seem to be fine, while two others are showing symptoms and will be seen by their physician to see if the symptoms are ordinary or something more serious.
At least 19 Alabamians received the tainted shots. Two have yet to be contacted. All of the patients were treated in either Tennessee or Florida. One of the Alabamians who received the shot at a Florida facility has died. An autopsy is pending to determine if meningitis was the cause of death. As for the Massachusetts pharmacy tied to the outbreak, all of its products have been recalled.
While none of Alabama health clinics received the tainted shot, 44 clinics did get other products from NECC. The Department of Public Health continues to contact 44 facilities that received products. Across the nation, 247 people have become ill from the tainted steroid shot. At least 19 people have died in 15 states.
