The mayor of the Chilton County town of Thorbsy died Monday, state senator Cam Ward confirms. Dearl Hilyer had recently gone to the hospital and may have died from cancer, according to Ward. He was in his 40's. Hilyer was re-elected in August for a second term as mayor. Hilyer had been in the hospital since Oct. 5.
The mayor pro temp in Jean Nelson, who will be starting her fifth term on the Thorsby City Council. A viewing for Hilyer will be held Wednesday night from 5 to 8 p.m. at Pates Chapel. His funeral will be held at Pates Chapel at 2 p.m. Thursday, with his burial following.
The family is requesting no flowers or food. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Town of Thorsby for Helen Jenkins Chapel.
